Rome High School Makes Newsweeks' Best Public High School List

May 06, 2013 -- 5:35pm

By: Laura-Jane Hatcher (WRGA News)

Its more accolades for Rome High School.

Newsweek has named it one of the top 2,000 public high schools in America. Rome and Trion High represent the only two schools in Northwest Georgia to make the list.

Just two weeks ago, the U.S. News & World Report released their own annual high school rankings, and Rome scored high there as well. Out of the 440 institutions in Georgia, the Wolves took the 46th slot, earning them a ‘Best High School in America’ silver award. It was the 4th time in the last six years they’d earned the honor.

The Newsweek rankings are based on a variety of data, including graduation rates, college acceptance rates, and average SAT/ACT scores.

Rome High School’s Phillip Spratling has been named a Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) for 2013.

Spratling, the son of Christine and Kevin Spratling of Rome, has the opportunity to be one of 8,300 Merit Scholarship winners from across the nation.  Winners will be notified in March.

“We’re so proud of Phillip’s achievement,” said Rome principal Dr. Tygar Evans.  “His commitment to excellence in his studies has created an opportunity for greater success for himself and will inspire others as well.”

According to the NMSC’s media release, about 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semi-finalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

Spratling plans to attend Georgia Tech this fall.

Rome High Sets AP Scholar Record

 August 8, 2012

Rome High announces that 42 students were named AP Scholars by the College Board for their performance on the Advanced Placement (AP) tests for 2012. The 42 AP Scholars is a new record for Rome High School.

Rome had 28 students named AP Scholar, 10 students named AP School with Honors and four students named AP Scholar with Distinction. This is a tremendous accomplishment for the teachers of the AP classes and the students that took the challenge of the most rigorous courses at our high school.

A total of 329 AP tests were taken at Rome High last year by 192 students. The number of tests taken was a 66% increase from 2011. This current school year, 2012 - 2013, there are 629 AP classes being taken by students at our high school. Could a new record for the number of AP Scholars be reached again at Rome High in 2013?

Please find below the students who were recognized as “AP Scholars” in 2012 by the College Board for their outstanding performance. Congratulations, Students, and Go Wolves!
